Soon glutamate diffuses from the binding sites on the channel...
The channel opens and the ions start to flow through it, thus depolarizing the
postsynaptic membrane and so exciting the postsynaptic nerve.
It binds to the receptor sites of the glutamate channel which lies in the postsynaptic
membrane.
...and glutamate diffuses into the synaptic cleft.
When the presynaptic nerve ending is electrically depolarized (depolarization
here shown in yellow colour), the synaptic vesicles with glutamate are released.
Glutamate is stored in vesicles in presynaptic nerve endings.
